Krakatoa SR implements a new function called “Repopulation” which converts a particle stream into a levelset and back to a particle stream.  None of the original particles are maintained, but a new “evenly” distributed particle stream takes it’s place.  It’s great for adding extra fill when your particle set is patchy and it can be done at rendertime so you don’t need to re-simulate anything.

We’ve implemented this into KrakFu, and here’s a video showing the results…

Recently our department has been developing simulation technology for surgical training. Like much of what we do here, the process begins with medical imaging data. Anatomical structures are isolated from this data, modified based on video footage of the procedure, and finally processed into optimized simulation models. The models and simulation engine are designed to run within the performance constraints of mobile devices  such as iPad™ and Android™ tablets. This sequence of images follows the process of turning raw volumetric cryomacrotome data into assets for an open inguinal hernia repair simulator.

Figure01Volumetric scans such as CT, MRI and cryomacrotome provide the foundation for simulated anatomical models. This image shows the scanned 3D data rendered in x-ray style. The region of interest for this inguinal hernia repair procedure is indicated (blue square).

It’s no secret that we use Fusion. And it’s no secret that we love Krakatoa. Now with Krakatoa SR we’ve been able to use them together like never before. I’ve recorded this screencast to show a first look at what we’ve been working on. The design isn’t final and there is still much to do, but already we have the power of krakatoa rendering right inside our comps.

Here is the announcement on the thinkboxsoftware’s website.
